The vestibular system is made up of components of the inner ear and brain. It is responsible for processing sensory information involved with controlling balance and eye movements.

What is a Vestibular disorder?

Injury or disorders of the vestibular system can result in symptoms such as; vertigo (a feeling of the room spinning around you), imbalance, nausea and/or visual impairment. Vestibular disorders can be caused by various factors, which may include; trauma (to the body, neck, face or head), aging, infections, tumors, environmental factors and/or for reasons unknown.

Commonly diagnosed vestibular disorders include; benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis , Ménière’s disease and labyrinthitis.

Treatment for Vestibular Disorders

Treatment of vestibular disorders is dependent on the cause. Some vestibular disorders (i.e. BPPV) can be treated using manual therapy techniques such as; Canalith repositioning maneuver, vestibular rehabilitation therapy and home based exercise. Dietary changes may also play a role in recovery.
